CROSS CAMPUS RALLY TO STOP DEPORTATION OF UofT STUDENT

Sep/30/2008 - 12:00 pm

LET SAAD STAY!

Tuesday, September 30
12noon
Sidney Smith Hall (100 St. George Street)

Students and Community members from across Toronto will rally at U of T to protect one of their own.

Saad Alam, 23, a student of Life Sciences and Psychology at U of T and his parents face imminent deportation to Bangladesh, unless the Minister of Immigration intervenes to grant him status.

Five years ago Saad Alam and his parents came to Canada. Shammi and Badrul Alam took two jobs each working day and night to put their son through school. Forced to pay international tuition, Saad, too took on jobs, working in restaurants for less than minimum wage.

For Immigration Canada, this was not enough!

Saad and his family's study and work permits have been withdrawn. A departure order has been issued to the family and they are scheduled to leave on 03 October 2008.

A student and Toronto resident for five years, Saad has touched the lives of many friends, fellow students and members of the Bengali community. Shammi works 60 hours a week as a personal support worker taking care of sick and elderly people in Mississauga while Badrul is a security guard and a cab driver. Working incessantly while paying exorbitant tuition fees, Shammi and Badrul have built a life for themselves in this city, scraping together money for a home they will have to abandon if forced to leave.

Students and Community Members will not stand aside and let one of their own be targeted.

STOP THE DEPORTATION OF THE ALAM FAMILY! LET THEM STAY!

We Demand:

* Minister of Immigration grant the Alams residency in Canada
* Access to Post-Secondary Education for all students regardless of immigration status
* No Immigration Enforcement on our campuses
