At 8:30am this morning, Daniel Garcia unwillingly boarded a plane to Mexico City. The new year begins with a hole in the Parkdale community and in our hearts.
With over 1600 petitions signed, Christmas Day meetings of 50 people, New Year's Eve rallies of 150 people, some believed that perhaps the Tories would listen to the 'public' that they always invoke. With politicians, church groups, teachers unions, the Toronto District School Board, and especially Daniel's teachers and fellow students all condemning the deportation and calling for his release and with headlines in every newspaper and TV station across the country telling his 'special' story, some thought that perhaps Jason Kenney would intervene and grant Daniel Garcia a temporary resident permit. He didn't.
Yet again, the Conservative government of the day (like all governments) has shown that it is committed to a single project - one of exclusion, exploitation and ongoing violence.
NEW YEAR'S EVE 2011: STOP THE COUNTDOWN TO DANIEL GARCIA'S DEPORTATION

Daniel Garcia's supporters are hopeful that Jason Kenney, the Minister of Immigration will grant the Temporary Resident's Permit filed with his office.

31 DECEMBER 2010 (New Year's Eve)
FEDERAL COURT OF APPEAL (180 QUEEN WEST)
Daniel Garcia's deportation has been set for Saturday, January 1, 2010 by the Canadian Border Services Agency. An urgent show of community support is needed at 11am on December 31, 2011, at 180 Queen Street West.
Since Daniel Garcia's unjust arrest, a week ago today, over 1,500 of us have signed petitions, nearly 200 of us have written emails and made phone calls, teachers, friends, community leaders, union activists and Members of Parliaments have spoken in support for freedom and status for Daniel Garcia.
Yet, the Greater Toronto Enforcement Centre of the Canadian Border Services Agency has ordered Daniel's deportation on Saturday, January 1, 2010.
An application to get him status has been filed with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. It is essential Daniel's deportation be stopped so that he has the ability to stay in Canada and have access to a fair hearing.
On Tuesday, Dec. 28, despite tremendous support from friends, teachers, and community members, the Canadian Border Services Agency refused to release Daniel Garcia back to his community, claiming that he was a "flight risk" and that they are preparing for an "imminent deportation".
Daniel is a Grade 11 student at Parkdale Collegiate Institute in Toronto. Whisked away to immigration jail over Christmas, he now faces removal to Mexico. His crime? Fleeing Mexico at the age of 15 after he and his sister endured ongoing violence as a result of her sexual orientation. Daniel has managed to create a life for himself in Canada. He is a committed student, and much loved member of the community. The Canadian Border Services Agency appears intent on deporting him, knowing full well that his immigration case was badly compromised because he has been forced to navigate the system on his own, as a teenager with out legal representation.
We, the undersigned, call on the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to stop the deportation of Mexican refugee claimant and Parkdale highschool student Daniel Garcia.
We demand that the Immigration Minister grant Daniel temporary status and allow him to have his PRRA fairly heard, and to ensure that he complete his school year and gain permanent status in Canada.
