New Endorsers!! See list of over 60 endorsing groups and organizations: May Day of Action Endorsers *This is a child-friendly demonstration. Millions across North America have taken to the streets in the last two years, demanding Status for All! In Toronto, workers, students, trade unionists, activists and community members have led passionate demonstrations calling for justice and dignity for immigrants and refugees. We continue to fight against the Conservative government's ongoing attacks on migrant communities. The last year has seen unprecedented targeting of refugees in Sanctuary. Asylum seekers have been arrested from schools, workplaces and even hospital beds. Families have been torn apart. Over 12,000 friends, family, and community members have been deported. On March 14th 2008, the Conservative government introduced a series of amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), buried in Bill c-50, a 136-page "budget implementation bill". If passed, the Minister will have the discretion to refuse applications even where the applicants meet the elitist and racist criteria for permanent residence, to refuse to even examine humanitarian applications filed from abroad, and to arbitrarily set quotas on the "category" of person that can enter Canada – including quotas based on country of origin. In the face of intimidation and fear, our communities have refused to be silenced. Together, we have forced immigration enforcement out of Toronto District schools. Inspired frontline community workers have taken up the struggle for Access Without Fear. We have fought and won a full Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) policy at many community agencies.

On Saturday May 5, 2007 over 2500 immigrants, refugees and supporters took to the streets of Toronto's west end to demand a national regularization program and an end to detentions and deportations as well as access to city services regardless of status. The loud and energetic march, which included entire families, began at Christie Pits Park in little Korea and marched through several immigrant neighbourhoods including little Ethiopia and little Portugal to end at Dufferin Grove Park for a lively community concert and fair.
This action marked the third year in a row that No One Is Illegal-Toronto has been part of organising a National Day of Action for Status for All across Canada and it has continued to grow every year! The march was part of a week of actions for immigrant/refugee rights in Canada and the United States which began on May 1 in several US cities as well as Vancouver, and included marches in Montreal as well.
For a list of all the groups that endorsed and supported the march, click here The march was led by a large contingent of trade unionists under the banner "Good Enough to Work, Good Enough to Stay". Workers from the Canadian Auto Workers, as well as the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation marched together with immigrant workers groups such as the Workers Action Centre, the Coalition of Concerned Taxi Drivers, the Philippine Women's Centre and SIKLAB, to declare that "Immigrant Rights are Worker's Rights!".
By ANDY BLATCHFORD MONTREAL (CP) - Hundreds of civil liberties advocates marched through Montreal and Toronto on Saturday to denounce the deportation and detention of migrants and refugees. Demonstrators said Canada should implement a more inclusive immigration program to help end the exploitation of undocumented workers. "These people make up the fabric of our daily lives but somehow fall to the wayside," said Aaron Lakoff, one of about 200 people who marched in Montreal. "By being out here with colourful flags, with music, with people most importantly, we’re trying to render some visibility to the struggle." He said there are an estimated 40,000 people without status in Montreal and as many as 500,000 across Canada. In Montreal, supporters of Algerian-born refugee claimant Abdelkader Belaouni waved placards calling for the government to give him status.
Saturday May 5, 2007 While several GTA roads were shut down Saturday and thousands marched in support of marijuana, hundreds got together for another cause: to stop the deportation of immigrants the Canadian government labels "illegal" and protestors insist are anything but. The march ran along Bloor St. past Christie Pits, primarily in support of one Toronto family. The Perez family has repeatedly tried to establish refugee status, but after two years is now facing deportation to Mexico. "It's very stressful for me because I have a deportation order very soon," said Angelica Perez. "I don't want to go back because it's too much corruption ... there's no safety for me and my family." Angelica works as a cleaning lady, her husband is a grocery clerk. Organizers of Saturday's rally claim as many as 80,000 people in Toronto live in fear of deportation.
Canadian Press TORONTO (CP) - Hundreds of protesters rallied in Toronto today against the scheduled deportation of a family that came to Canada to flee persecution by Mexican police. Angelica Gallegos Perez says her family has been given a deportation order and is to be sent back to Mexico next month. Perez, who could not hold back tears as she spoke, believes the police are after her and fears for the lives of her children if they are forced to return. She came to Canada two years ago with her husband and two children, and says they have been living as model citizens ever since. The family has spent its life savings in legal fees and on applications, and now lacks the funds needed to apply for asylum on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. |
No One is Illegal (Toronto) is a group of immigrants, refugees and allies who fight for the rights of all migrants to live with dignity and respect.
We believe that granting citizenship to a privileged few is part of a racist immigration and border policies designed to exploit and marginalize migrants. We work to oppose these policies, as well as the international economic policies that create the conditions of poverty and war that force migration. At the same time, it is part of our ongoing work to support and build alliances with Indigenous peoples in their fight against colonialism, displacement and the ongoing occupation of their land. WE DEMAND:
