No One Is Illegal-Brampton
August 12, 2007 No one is illegal. That was the theme this morning as chapters of No One is Illegal and students from Sheridan College partnered for a walk at Erindale Park. Over 40 showed up to walk run and ride at the event held to draw attention to the plight of Zahir Ofuq, a philosopher and writer who was forced to flee Afghanistan for fear of persecution by the government. The organizations hope to help Ofuq gain status in Canada and reunite him with his family, who are hiding in Pakistan. Funds raised from the walk go to help Ofuq apply to stay in Canada on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. Student Hussein Albaz said he understands what Ofuq is going through. “I wanted to help organize this event because I personally relate to being displaced," he said. "I'm Palestinian and this experience means that I understand what it means for conflict to dictate where you and your family live.”
Aug 12 2007 - 9:30am Aug 12 2007 - 2:00pm Etc/GMT+5 Eridale Park, Mississauga (see map below) On August 12, Sheridan College students, No One is Illegal-Brampton, No One is Illegal-Toronto and members of the community will be participating in a walk/run/ride to draw attention to experiences of displaced persons and to raise funds for the Ofuq family. Zahir Ofuq is a philosopher and writer who fled his homeland, Afghanistan, 13 years ago to avoid persecution from the Mujahidin Government. Zahir has been living in Canada in a state of limbo for 13 years. The Canadian Government will not deport him due to the ongoing war in his homeland and he is not able to gain status due to the current short falls in Canada's refugee system. Our goal is to help Zahir gain status in Canada so he can be reunited with his family who is currently in hiding in Pakistan and whom Zahir has not seen since he originally fled Afghanistan. In order to gain status Zahir needs to submit a Humanitarian and Compassionate application which costs $1400. Currently this is the only way Zahir and his family can gain permanent status. The Ofuq story of displacement is connected to the millions of people who are displaced across the world. Moreover, the Canadian government and companies are actively involved in the dire situations that make people leave or not be able to return to their country of origin. Join us on August 12 to raise funds for the Ofuq family's application fee and to draw attention to how Canada is displacing people in Canada and around the world through military occupation, environmental degradation and broken promises. The 5 kilometer Walk/Run/ Ride will be in Erindale Park in Mississauga located at 1695 Dundas Street West. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. (signs will direct you to the area). After participants complete their walk/run/ride, we invite everyone to mingle and enjoy delicious Afghan food. The event will finish by 2:00 p.m. JOIN US!

Brampton, April 3, 2007 – Since January over sixty students from Sheridan's Davis campus have been busy preparing to participate in the May 5, 2007 National Day of Action for immigrants and refugees being organized by No One is Illegal – Toronto. Sheridan students will be joining thousands across Canada who will demonstrate against the deportation and detention of migrants and refugees and for a full and ongoing regularization program. Sheridan students have established a student club called "No One is Illegal – Brampton" like their Toronto counterpart. "We started this student group because we realize, at the end of the day, immigrants get the short end of the stick," said Adrian Rodill, a second year social service worker student at Sheridan. "It's a myth that Canada treats immigrants well". Sheridan students are raising awareness about immigration issues within Sheridan by doing class presentations, hosting movie nights and doing general outreach within the college which has a high immigrant population. The student group will also be doing presentations in Peel high schools and local social services.

No One is Illegal (Toronto) is a group of immigrants, refugees and allies who fight for the rights of all migrants to live with dignity and respect.
We believe that granting citizenship to a privileged few is part of a racist immigration and border policies designed to exploit and marginalize migrants. We work to oppose these policies, as well as the international economic policies that create the conditions of poverty and war that force migration. At the same time, it is part of our ongoing work to support and build alliances with Indigenous peoples in their fight against colonialism, displacement and the ongoing occupation of their land.
